That's the double curse for some people who drink. Second, if you are really heavily addicted, you can die if you just try to stop on your own. That's aside from the heavy cravings. But there are successful programs that help alcoholics recover and the addicted person can reclaim a drug-free life. It's doesn't have to be endless meetings and self discipline. Some programs really replace the old life with a new one.
