That's the double curse for some people who drink. They get drunk, they are in danger of accidents, alcohol poisoning, and risk from unprotected sex, assaults, and such, but as an added bonus, they can also get addicted. Alcohol is in a way a crueler addiction than heroin. First, it hides behind the legality of alcohol. You don't get arrested for being drunk unless you create a problem or you drive. Second, if you are really heavily addicted, you can die if you just try to stop on your own. That's aside from the heavy cravings. But there are successful programs that help alcoholics recover and the addicted person can reclaim a drug-free life. It's doesn't have to be endless meetings and self discipline. Some programs really replace the old life with a new one.
