Alcoholism can be a hidden addiction because it can hide behind social acceptability. Of course, the difference is that one's "drinking buddies" may be able to quit if they realize their lives are sliding but maybe one can't quit when one wants. Government agencies define alcohol abuse as when someone is using alcohol and it damage their life, the work, their social contacts, but they keep on drinking. It's not defined as addiction but it might as well be. Addiction really is when there are withdrawal symptoms and tolerance too but in a practical, real life way, when a person can't stop using a substance even when they want to, they are addicted.
