The Nature of Underage Drinking

Underage alcohol use is a sweeping problem with serious health and safety repercussions for the Nation. A substantial number of young people begin drinking before the age of 13, which frequently results in alcohol abuse or dependence. The highest prevalence of alcohol dependence is among people ages 18-20. The conclusion being that the impetus is on parents and people in the community to educate children about the dangers of underage drinking and the consequences tha [...]

Drug Rehab: A Success Story

The prospect of seeking treatment for your addiction can be daunting. You can never know what to expect. However, many people get help for their addictions everyday and the following is a success story from one such person that I hope will inspire others to make a change in their life and get the help they need:

"I feel like a new person today, then when I first arrived. My thinking has changed dramatically. My view on life has changed. [...]

Alcohol is ranked much more harmful than the Class A drug Ecstasy in a new classification system proposed by a team of leading scientists. The team identified three main factors that together determine the harm associated with any drug of potential abuse: the physical harm to the individual user caused by the drug; the tendency of the drug to induce dependence and addiction; and the effect of drug use on families, communities, and society. Many people scoff at t [...]

Addicts and their future

When a person is addicted, there is no future. There is only keeping withdrawal symptoms at bay, or chasing that next high. When they are addicted, the use of drugs or alcohol seems to them to be the thing that makes them feel normal. It's hard for a person who has never been addicted to understand thoroughly. It's the only way they feel normal, it's as important to them as breathing or eating if they are starving. This is why they may neglect children, jobs, spouses and businesses.
Getting help when you need it

Some people put off getting help until they have done irreparable damage to their lives. It's so foolish. Help is available. But addiction is so compelling that some people can't acquire the objectivity to see that they need help. But families know. They usually know for a long time before the addicted person really hits bottom and decides they can't live this way any more. families matter a lot when there is an addiction. So many people I have known who got help got it because they [...]

Drying out is not rehab

When we ask how many rehabs people have done, when they are asking about the rehab we run here... some people talk about five day detoxes or a hospital detox. That's not treatment, they just helped support the person medically while they came off a drug. There's a lot of services that are offered in this area, addiction treatment, that are not really treatment at all. Real treatment should enable the person to live drug-free after treatment has been completed. I only know of two places t [...]

Alcohol and the rite of passage

I'm going to voice my opinion here. The rites of passage that include alcohol are some of the stupidest customs in this country. So many young people take it for granted, in colleges especially in fraternity houses it's just about a rule. In fact, I would bet money that anyone in a fraternity who didn't drink would be ridiculed. And then there are injuries and deaths, people fall off balconies, drown in pools, have car accidents. Or they have unprotected sex, get assaulted or assa [...]

Alcoholism hides

Alcoholism can be a hidden addiction because it can hide behind social acceptability. Of course, the difference is that one's "drinking buddies" may be able to quit if they realize their lives are sliding but maybe one can't quit when one wants. Government agencies define alcohol abuse as when someone is using alcohol and it damage their life, the work, their social contacts, but they keep on drinking. It's not defined as addiction but it might as well be. Addiction really [...]

Alcohol successes

I was talking to a fellow the other day that had gone through the rehab I work at, and he had done the program for alcohol. He was such a bright and shiny person that I had a hard time seeing an alcoholic anywhere in that space. The same with a young woman who had been a pro soccer player. She was ruining herself with sitting at home drinking when she was not working. I have talked to many people here who didn't care if they lived or died when they were drinking or doing drugs. I don't q [...]

Alcohol is different

When people get addicted to alcohol, it's different from most drugs. They have to withdraw gradually. Going cold turkey works for some drugs but when a person has been consuming too much alcohol for too long, then they have to taper off. It's kind of odd for me to think of a person going to a detox and getting given alcohol. But the body gets so adjusted to the alcohol that it can't detox too fast. A person can go into convulsions and even die. How cruel it is that a serious alcoh [...]

Healing alcoholic lives

How do you help an alcoholic? Is it by being nice and helpful? Is it by bailing the person out of their problems? Is it by paying their rent? Lying in court for them? Actually it's not. The best way to help is by telling the person that you care for them so much that you will only help them get into rehab. It's a very tough thing. I had to be tough with a husband that was addicted to meth. But it saved me. In the long run and even the not so long run, it was the only thing I could do.

When someone needs help

Out of a hundred people who are having problems with addiction, a very small percentage seek help. The reason most of the others don't seek help is that they don't think they need help. Denial is part and parcel of addiction. It's the cruelest trap. The very substance that traps them creates the illusion of well being so they don't reach for the help they need to live a productive, enjoyable life.

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse reports that abuse of prescription drugs has nearly doubled
Many of us were raised to think that there are such things as good drugs, like different types of over the counter and prescription drugs, and bad drugs like cocaine, meth, heroin or LSD.
