One of the worst parts of addiction is the fact that is rather conceals itself. A person can be so convinced that it's necessary for them to continue to use their drug or alcohol of choice that life's meaning becomes getting more of your drug or kind of alcohol. And since they only feel normal when they have achieved their usual high, it's valuable to them to continue to get that high so they can feel normal. If someone tries to take that away, they are taking something valuable away and are very often fought.

 Of course, there are plenty of people who do want help because they have seen that they are losing too much, they have hit a crisis and they want to change. 

 One of the very best things this society could do would be to make effective help broadly available. We'd get so many productive citizens back.
